Laser Wood Box

D-VINE

Ramos Pinto was founded in 1880 and rapidly became noted for its innovative and enterprising strategy. Devoted to high quality wine production, is considered one of the most prestigious Port Wine brands.

Our studio was asked to redesign the traditional woodbox for Ramos Pinto premium and aged Vintage Port Wines, keeping material and structure the same and cost as low as possible.

Because this type of packaging is used massively by other Port Wine brands, we questioned its production process and raised a technological innovation which became a huge differentiation among its competitors.

Standard production routine is often divided in two different moments: graphics are burned into wood and afterwards packaging is assembled. So we decided to change the only variable that is used in 99% of this packaging typology — we replaced wood-burning by laser cut, allowing to completely cut out graphics all around.

A bottle silhouette replaces the rectangular edged frame keeping the function of holding it in; typography is cutted-out enabling light to pass through and provoking light/shadows effects.

This packaging brings together an old craft wood assemblage technique and a hi-tech laser cut technology, never used before in Portuguese wine packaging.

D—Vine is an independent design studio based in Porto (Portugal), established in 2014 by Elias Marques & Sérgio Correia, both graphic designers and educators. Our conviction is that design cannot happen without passion, creativity, work and commitment and we feel pretty passionate about it.

We can help a client's product appeal, explain a complicated process to the end-user, and make an effective promotion of it. We love wine! That's why we turn our feelings into success.
