Ota Benga

Emily Kim

Ota Benga is a documentary poster that reflects the heart-wrenching story of Congolese man, Ota Benga, illustrating the continuing narrative of prejudice within society in an effort to bring to light the controversial issue of racism surrounding his captivity.

With the current political climate and rising social issues, Benga’s shameful story of racial discrimination and tragedy continue to concern us as well as educate us to this day.

The poster utilizes powerful brush strokes to invoke a compelling imagery that emulates Benga’s dramatic life story, while the crossed strokes advocate the issue of racism in current society.

The dark background infused with rough textures imply the shadows that are still hidden of African-Americans history, as the solid color contrast of red in the typography raises awareness of the racial prejudice and discrimination that resides in modern day society.
