This project consisted of designing a book collection based on a real book and redesigning the cover and interior of that book according to the concept our collection was based on, without altering its content.
I decided that my collection would be designed around the concept of enhancing the work of contemporary cult film directors, such as the Coen Brothers, conveying the sensation of watching their films through the book.
There are many books about classical film directors, but what about the contemporary ones? Why not make a delicate and respectful book about their work as well? And how can we convey the viewing experience of their films to a book?I opted for an experimental format, adjusting the dimensions of the book to the proportions of some of the Coen’s screen aspect ratio.
The format also has a horizontal page reading direction, this way the photographs take up entire pages and look like authentic film frames. In addition, to convey a sober cult image, I used only three colours: white, black and red.
Black and white like in classical films, black cover and black edges like the darkness of the movie theatre and credits, and red touches in the interior and the velvety bookmark like the classical cinema seats.
This book has also been sewed, screen-printed and cloth-bounded manually by me. It was a fictitious editorial project for an Editorial Design Projects class at EASD València. Project tutored by Juliana Javaloy.
